Austrian Philharmonic

Step into the grandeur of European minting with the Austrian Philharmonic coin series—an internationally acclaimed bullion program that harmonizes musical heritage with investment-grade purity. First introduced in 1989 by the Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich), these coins pay tribute to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the world’s most celebrated ensembles.
Designed by Chief Engraver Thomas Pesendorfer, each coin features the Great Organ of the Musikverein’s Golden Hall on the obverse, and a medley of orchestral instruments—violin, cello, harp, Vienna horn, and bassoon—on the reverse. This motif remains unchanged year after year, reinforcing its timeless appeal.
The Philharmonic was Austria’s answer to the global demand for high-purity bullion following the decline of South Africa’s Krugerrand due to apartheid-era sanctions. With a fineness of .9999 gold, it quickly rose to prominence, becoming the best-selling gold coin in the world in 1992, 1995, 1996, and 2000. In 2008, the Mint expanded the series to include .999 silver, and later .9995 platinum in 2016, each maintaining the same iconic design.
Unlike fixed mintage programs, Philharmonic coins are minted according to demand, with annual production varying based on global market conditions. In peak years, gold mintage has exceeded 1 million coins, while silver issues have ranked among the top three best-selling bullion coins worldwide.
Whether you're acquiring fractional sizes or full-ounce pieces, each coin offers a blend of cultural prestige, artistic consistency, and VAT-free trading across much of Europe. This collection is ideal for those who value not just the metal, but the music and meaning behind it.
